Rodney K. Nickens Jr.
Founder and Principal Consultant
Rodney K. Nickens Jr., JD, MA is the Founder of R&N Strategies, LLC, a San Francisco Bay Area-based political consulting firm focused on identifying, recruiting, and advising progressive grassroots candidates of color for local elected offices in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Rodney is a millennial political strategist, consultant, and small business owner, an appointed Board Member on the Oakland Housing, Residential Rent, and Relocation Board, a University Trustee, an elected Assembly District Delegate to the California Democratic Party, and the Program Officer for Policy and Innovation at the San Francisco Foundation.
Early in his career, Rodney has had the privilege of serving in critical roles on the frontlines of progressive change in California and across the nation. With over 10 years of experience working at the local, regional, state, and federal levels of government affairs, public policy policy, and social justice advocacy, Rodney has a passion for nurturing the next generation of progressive political talent in our country and is on a mission to build a dynamic, progressive political bench of that is truly representative of 21st century America.
Driven by a passion for racial, economic and housing justice, Rodney has served on numerous local and regional boards and committees including, the Regional Housing Needs Allocation Housing Methodology Committee at the Association of Bay Area Governments, as well as the One Bay Area Grant Program, Priority Development Area, and the Regional Transit Oriented Development Technical Advisory Committees at the Metropolitan Transportation Commission. Rodney's work has included advising regional housing planning staff and elected officials throughout the Bay Area on regional policy, programs, and strategies that preserve and expedite production of affordable housing, protect tenants, advance racial justice and economic equity, and proactively address historical patterns of racial exclusion and segregation.
He is a 2009 graduate of the inaugural class at the University of California, Merced, a 2011 graduate of the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African-American Studies at UCLA, and a 2016 graduate of the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where he earned a certificate in Social Justice Lawyering. Rodney is a native of Portsmouth, Virginia and currently resides in Oakland, California.

ORGANIZATIONS I'VE WORKED WITH
Rodney has served on the boards of several non-profit organizations rooted in millennial civic engagement including the East Bay Stonewall Democratic Club, the Black Young Democrats of Sacramento, and the California Young Democrats Black Caucus. As a passionate social justice advocate, he has volunteered on numerous local, state, and federal campaigns for Democratic leaders. He was a 2020 New Leaders Council (NLC) Oakland Fellow and currently serves on the Regional Planning Committee at the Association of Bay Area Governments and on the Board of Directors for NLC Oakland and the Greenlining Institute Academy Alumni Association, where his focus includes affordable housing advocacy, racial equity, civic engagement, leadership and professional development and digital organizing and communications.
